The Fabrique Alsacienne de Levure et Alcools, “FALA” for short, was founded in Strasburg in 1920 and in just a few years developed into one of the most important French yeast manufacturers.
In 1968, just a stone’s throw over the river Rhine, a sales and marketing company was also founded: FALA GmbH. Originally domiciled in Achern in Baden, the company’s registered office is now situated in Kehl am Rhein, just over the water from Strasbourg. This makes it just eight kilometres as the crow flies from the huge SIL FALA yeast plant in the Strasbourg port area.
A contributing factor to the successful growth story of the Lesaffre Group, which currently boasts 63 production sites and more than 10,000 employees worldwide, was the takeover of the renowned baker’s yeast manufacturer, ASMUSSEN, situated in Elmshorn near Hamburg. The ASMUSSEN firm, originally founded in 1884, was acquired by Lesaffre in 2009.
In 2016, taking all needs into account and as part of the whole group’s brand strategy, the structure for Germany was given a new face-lift: FALA and ASMUSSEN became the new baking mix and yeast product brands of the newly named “Lesaffre Deutschland”.
2018 thus marks a double anniversary: 50 years of Fala GmbH and the 50-year presence of the Lesaffre Group in Germany. A special celebration will be held on 17th September 2018 during the IBA to mark the occasion. Lesaffre in Germany stands for Innovation and Tradition.
